Biographical Sketch

 

Bill Walraven, a Corpus Christi Caller-Times daily columnist and reporter, covered the police beat, courthouse, schools, and other general assignments for 21 years.  His historical works include Corpus Christi: The History of a Texas Seaport and El Rincon:

A History of Corpus Christi Beach. Since his retirement from the paper, he has pursued his love of history.  Walraven is an active member of the Nueces County Historical Society, the Texas State Historical Association, and the National Society of Newspaper Columnists.

Working with Walraven in his research has been his wife and colleague, Marjorie Walraven, who retired in 1989 after nearly thirty years as a journalism teacher/publications adviser at Mary Carroll High School. Part-time copy editor for The Corpus Christi Caller-Times for 22 years, Ricky is a life member and former president of the Texas Association of Journalism Educators and in 1984 received a “Certificate of Merit Journalism Achievement Award” from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.  In 2002, she was named one of seventy-five “Legends of Texas High School Journalism” by the Interscholastic League Press Conference.

Together the Walraven’s have written several works, including Gift of the Wind: The Corpus Christi Bayfront, Empresarios’ Children: The Welders of Texas, and The Magnificent Barbarians: Little-told Tales of the Texas Revolution.
