The La Retama Central Library offers a broad range of comprehensive reference services through the Reference and Information Department. Sources include business and investment information, materials for homework assignments, funding information, newspapers, magazines, online magazine database, Texas Government Documents, Census data, and Electronic Information Services including the Internet are all available. Reference assistance is available in the library and also by telephone. Branch libraries provide limited services designed to meet more general needs.
The Local History Department at the La Retama Central Library contains materials and services in three areas: local history, Texas History, and genealogy. Materials in this collection must be used in the library. Assistance is available to persons involved in detailed research into the history of the city and to the budding genealogist alike. Local History services vary from regular La Retama Central Library hours and also includes reference assistance in person and by telephone.
The Children's Department at all area branches contain materials for children of all ages, a wide variety of programs and special events including story time, arts and crafts, family films and other reading activities. Story time and arts & crafts are ongoing weekly programs at the La Retama Library. Interlibrary Loan Services are also available to patrons. If materials such as a book or magazine article cannot be located, the Interlibrary Loan division of the South Texas Library System may be able to borrow it from another library. Contact any public library for details.
Free seminars and workshops at the La Retama Central Library are offered on a monthly basis. These seminars range from "Getting Started on the Internet" to "An Introduction to E-mail" to "Learn How to Use the Funding Center." Check the News & Events section of this web site for specific times and dates.
An Accessible Resource Center for people with mobility problems, visual and hearing is also available.
